- The Bob Graham Round -

A long-distance walk / run in the Lake District.

A Brief History

Bob Graham, a 42 year old Keswick publican, established his round of 42 Lakeland summits on 13th June 1932. He set off from the Moot Hall in Keswick at 1.00 am, travelled clockwise as viewed on the map, and arrived back in Keswick 23 hours and 39 minutes later, having covered about 72 miles and ascended approximately 27000 feet, wearing plimsolls. He thus set a new Lakeland long-distance record which was to stand for 28 years. It was eventually broken by Alan Heaton, a 32 year old member of the Lancashire athletic club, Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, on 24th June 1960. He traversed the same summits, but in an anticlockwise direction, in a time of 22 hours and 18 minutes.

Below are details of the Bob Graham Round which I completed in 1975. It may be of interest to anyone planning an attempt.

A Clockwise Round - 7 June 1975

Weather - A warm but strong southerly wind from midnight to sunrise, then very hot sunshine during the day. The tops were clear and it remained dry throughout.
